Welcome to the first week of the ABC Challenge. As we explained in the introduction to the 2020 Slamseys Creative Summer Challenge, this year it’s loosely themed around the alphabet. Naturally, we start at the very beginning, which we all know is a very good place to start …
A is for Alphabet
Here are 10 Alphabet Projects that you could try over the summer.
1 ILLUSTRATE THE ALPHABET
Make an Illustrated Alphabet in the form of a book, poster or series of cards. Take your time to research and work on your ideas. We have a few ideas on our Pinterest board to start you off. Choose random images or pick a theme like an A to Z of animals, flowers or yoga poses …
2 FEED THE ALPHABET
Cook and/or eat your way through the alphabet this summer from Artichokes to Zabaglione. Cook dishes from different countries or regions, working through the alphabet or choose a letter and make as many things as possible.Or just eat alphabet spaghetti.
3 CRAFT THE ALPHABET
Have a creative summer by working your way through an alphabet of crafts from animation to zoetrope. We’ll be posting an A-Z of projects and prompts next week if you need some ideas.
4 COLOUR THE ALPHABET
There are so many weird and wonderful paint colour names that it should be possible to mix an A to Z of colour and if you struggle, make up your own names.
Use your mixed colours as the starting point for printing and painting or make a colour wheel and experiment with tones and shades.
5 PHOTOGRAPH THE ALPHABET
Seek out letters of the alphabet on buildings, packaging and signs or make an A-Z list of things you’d like to photograph. Photograph with intention rather than idly clicking.
6 READ THE ALPHABET
Investigate new authors by starting at A and working through to Z. At the library, you could find the right shelf, close your eyes and pick a book at random.
7 ARRANGE THE ALPHABET
Collect interesting objects and make arrangements, perhaps concentrating on one letter each day. Make a version of a cabinet of curiosities, turn your collection into a work of art or arrange it outside and leave it to decompose. Record your collections by sketching, photographing or filming, write about how you found your pieces, your feelings about them and life. Use all this for reference later.
8 SEW THE ALPHABET
Embroider a sampler, make fabric letters, piece together an alphabet quilt. Sew monogrammed napkins or handkerchieves.
9 WRITE THE ALPHABET
Practise your calligraphy skills to create beautiful alphabets. Decorate a chalkboard, write beautiful cards and envelopes or write out your family tree.
10 CREATE ALPHABET ADVENTURES
Plan a series of adventures in alphabetical order, make an alphabetical treasure trail or plot journeys where you can tick off each letter of the alphabet.
